The US president has signed a new act that will see a $5 (£3.34) gold piece commemorating the nation's army produced.A series of six coin designs are being created by the US Mint and the Army Historical Foundation that will be minted and sold in 2011 to honour US soldiers.
George Bush signed the United States Army Commemorative Coin Act of 2008, which authorises the creation of the first ever US coins issued to celebrate the army past and present.
Senator Daniel Inouye stated: "The minting of the commemorative coin will serve as a tribute to the sacrifices the men and women of the United States Army have made in defense of the freedom and honor of our country."
Part of the revenue generated through sales of the army commemorative coins will be used to support the proposed new National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir.
In other news, a US auction featuring a number of historic gold coins is expected to raise at least $50 million on January 8th.
