A number of rare Spanish and Latin American gold coins - including one believed to be the most expensive in the world - have been sold for hundreds of thousands of euros apiece at a sale in Barcelona.

The Aureo & Calico auction took place on October 21st and 22nd and saw a 1609 gold centen sell for €800,000 (£730,078) - although experts had believed it could fetch a price of more than €2 million.

Another gold centen went for €500,000, while a coin believed to be the first struck during the Aragon-Navarra period in the 11th century fetched a price of €40,000 and another gold coin thought to be the first minted in Leon attracted a winning bid of €50,000, CoinLink reports.

Some 2,200 gold coins from a range of eras in Spanish and Latin American history went up for sale at the auction.

They came from the Caballero de las Yndias private collection of coins, believed to be one of the largest of its kind.

Last month, 13 gold coins from the 18th century were found near a Roman bridge located in Cordoba, Spain, according to an El Pais report cited by Typically Spanish.
