A gold coin commemorating the life of St Dimitar - known as a 'wonder worker' - has been launched by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).The piece went on sale last week and features the BNB's logo on the obverse and a replica of a black-and-white woodcut created by Nickola Klinkov in 1870 featuring St Dimitar on a horse on the reverse.
About 4,000 of the gold coins will be made by the bank in total. Each coin has a face value of 100 Bulgarian lev.
The coins were designed by Krassimir Angelov, Borislav Kyosev and Razvigor Kolev.
Also known as Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, St Dimitar was born in the third century and the date of his death - October 26th - is marked every year as a feast day by the Eastern Orthodox Church in Bulgaria.
The date is also seen as a significant day for the turning of the seasons - a saying in the country states that St Dimitar brings winter, while St George brings summer.
