Ancient gold coins amassed by a number of distinguished collectors will go on sale later today in New York.

The International Coin Sale is being held by auction house Stack's.

It will feature lots from the Clinton Sherwood Ward Collection, including a high-grade gold Octadrachm of Arsinoe II coin from Egypt and rare Roman aurei coins.

In addition, Roman aurei featuring a near-complete set of the 12 Caesars in gold will be auctioned from the Securitas Collection.

There will also be a gold Catherine II medal of the St Petersburg Foundling Home in Russia, which weighs in at almost three ounces. In 1899, the home, which Catherine founded, cared for some 33,366 children, according to New Advent.

Elsewhere, there will be specimens auctioned from the Mexico Maxico Collection, which comprises various gold pieces from the Mexican Republic, as well as gold coins from Austria, Germany and Italy dating from the Renaissance to the 19th century.
