Sales of gold bullion coins produced by the US Mint have registered an increase in the last week, new figures show.

Statistics reported by CoinNews show that sales of the one-tenth ounce fractional gold American Eagle coin reached 310,000 for the year in the last seven days, with 30,000 being sold in the month to date.

The one-half and one-quarter ounce versions saw sales of 1,000 and 2,000 respectively after being added to the US Mint's July tally for the first time.

Meanwhile, the one-ounce gold Eagle coin passed the 700,000 milestone in terms of year-to-date sales after selling 85,000 units in July so far.

The US Mint has sold gold coins weighing a collective 762,000 ounces since the start of 2010, representing 53.5 per cent of the total sold for the whole of last year.

Last month, the mint announced that the next gold coin it is to launch will be the First Spouse series half-ounce Buchanan's Liberty coin on September 2nd.
