An upcoming sale of gold coins and other numismatic items in August offers a few "noteworthy" pieces for collectors, reports CoinLink.

They include a Davis-type 1839 Half Eagle, a gold coin with a $5 face value graded AU-58 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.

Columnist Greg Reynolds notes the design differences in this series, which encyclopaedia authors Ron Guth and Jeff Garrett considered to be significant.

"I encourage collectors to study 1839 and later 'No Motto' Liberty Head Half Eagles and contemplate this matter," Mr Reynolds advises.

A design point to consider could be the heads on the coins, which are visibly different from later editions in the Half Eagle series.

In an earlier column, Mr Reynolds noted that the summer months often see a slight dip in terms of the number of gold coin sales taking place.

This occurs between the Long Beach Expo in spring and the ANA Convention of the summer, during which time he claimed many dealers and collectors alike are on vacation.
