A particularly rare example of a gold coin designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens will be auctioned next month.

The only known 1907 $10 plain edge coin with wire rim will be offered to bidders at the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money in Boston, Massachusetts by Heritage Auction Galleries on August 11th.

It is one of only two examples of the coin to have been struck after Theodore Roosevelt asked Saint-Gaudens to redesign two of the US's largest gold coins. They were made to see how they would look, rather than for circulation purposes.

Later versions of the 1907 $10 coin had 46 stars along the edge rather than a plain surface.

Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auction Galleries, said it is possible the coin was the only one of his own gold designs that Saint-Gaudens ever held in his hands before he died, as the other specimen was sent to Roosevelt before being transferred back to the mint where it was made.

"The possibility is remarkably poignant: a great artist, just days away from death, gets a glimpse of his last major work," Mr Rohan remarked.

Stack's sold the coin for $322,000 (£207,916) in July 2008.
