The jungles of Erode in India have become the latest location for the discovery of a hoard of gold coins.

A total of 744 antique gold coins were discovered in the tribal hamlet of Kottamalam in the Erode district, near Sathyamangalam jungles.

The Times of India reports that the coins were in an earthen pot believed to be centuries old and, together, weigh around 300 grams.

However, the total number of gold coins in the pot could be greater than has already been found, with police leading the search for more.

That is because local families became aware of the coins and hid around 700 of them in their homes, the newspaper explains.

The news follows the discovery of gold coins inside a cannon in the 1815 Spanish fleet off the Floridian coast.

Salvage workers became suspicious that the cannon may contain more than just seawater when they noticed coins encrusted on to its outer surface.
