Melton Mowbray resident Mike Munroe has been given permission to hunt for gold relics believed to be hidden off the coast of Costa Rica.During the 1820s, a hoard of gold statues, crowns and other relics are believed to have left the Peruvian capital of Lima, reports the Telegraph.
They were shipped out during the final days of Spanish control, in about 1823.
Now a decade's research has led Mr Munroe to believe that he knows where the treasure lies - and he has set out to retrieve it.
The Costa Rican government has given permission for the exploration, on the island of Cocos, due to its low impact on the environment.
Instead of digging, Mr Munroe intends to map underground conditions using geophysics and then dispatch small probes to investigate any anomalies.
While Cocos Island has a surface area of less than 50 sq km, numerous expeditions to hunt for the treasure believed to be buried there have failed in the past.
