A new gold coin has been issued by the People's Bank of China to mark the 30th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

The 100-yuan coin measures 22 mm in diameter and consists of one-quarter of an ounce of pure gold, Xinhua reports.

It has a maximum mintage of 20,000 units and is legal tender in China.

Shenzhen, which is situated in Guangdong province, was originally a city but was made a special economic zone in 1980.

The area was expanded to five times its previous size earlier this month as part of attempts to speed up the development of Shenzen.

Other gold pieces launched by the People's Bank of China this year include collector's coins featuring a panda, which are issued with different designs on an annual basis.

The coin is available in seven sizes and range from weights of 0.05 ounces to 1 kg, according to Coin Update.
